The Papa Smurf Effect

Okay, before you think i’ve gone crazy, hear me out. I’ve been looking at the whole plethora of prognosticators who would have me to belive that This election is closer than I, you, or anybody thinks. Now, I know people are talking a lot about the Bradley Effect, named for Tom Bradley, the african-american politician who lost the 1982 governors race despite being ahead in all the polls leading up to election, but, I just don’t see that happening this year. Instead, I think the following possibility could occur, The Papa Smurf Effect. According to, well, me, I explain the Papa Smurf Effect as such;

The Idea that each individual voter would forsake voting due to their belief that the one running will have an overwhelming positive response even without their vote.

In laymans terms, People take it for granted that their one vote won’t be missed in the grand scheme of things, and so they don’t vote. Only problem is, everybody else thinks the same thing, and so, no one votes. It happened to Papa Smurf when I was a kid, and It can happen to Obama.

Now, In Papa Smurf’s case, there was simply reelection and Papa Smurf was rightfully given his spot among the others Smurfs. But, if there is a Papa Smurf Effect with Obama, he won’t be so lucky.

Heat Journal – 1/82

Heat 115 | Knicks 120

Well…..

Overall, you gotta like what you saw from the Heat tonight. I personally think that the Heatians will win at least 40 this season and if that’s the case, the winning will need to begin this Friday.

The Good

  • Wade looks awesome again – Man, what can I say about Wade? He was back to his old self and almost helped us pull it out tonight before he was thrown out with his 6th foul on the evening. I’m really liking the plan to utilize Wade and Chalmers in the backcourt and hope that they both stay healthy throughout this season.
  • Mario Chalmers is a (mini) beast – For all the talk of the Derrick Rose debut, Mario Chalmers was every bit as good this evening, and played an intricate role in helping us stay in the game late. I’m excited to see that we have possibly found our point guard starter for the season in M.C., though i’m going to reserve a judgment until I can see more of Shaun Livingston. BTW, What’s up with Shaun? I think we might have a future all-star on our hands.
  • The Matrix and U-Do both had double-doubles on the evening – I said previously that in order for the Heat to be successful this season, Shawn Marion and Udonis would have to step up big. They Did! I really liked how Udonis made the big grabs and how Shawn Marion did all the little things. Hopefully they’ll begin to mesh more down low and build that brick wall style of play where the low post is always protected.

The Bad

  • Michael Beasley was underwhelming – I mean, he was the only starter for the Heat not to reach double digits (9 points). But, it wasn’t just the points, but more the fact that he just looked lost in the scheme of things. I would’ve given him a pass on the basis of first game jitters if it weren’t for the fact that Chalmers gave us 17 & 8 (assists). Let’s see how he does in the home opener.
  • Okay, I couldn’t really find another sore point – Overall, they played well. I mean, you could go with the whole low 3-point percentage argument, but they really did show a lot of grit tonight, putting up 40 points in the 4th quarter to pull within 3 points.

The Analysis

It’s going to be a decent season if the heat can get the ball rolling on this whole run-and-gun style they used to close out the game

A New Direction

Well, It’s October 9th and I am finished with the CAMA nominations listing, i’m finished with ’08 show script skeleton, I’m finished with the CAMA Performance list, and I’m finished with the master planning grid. So, what now?

As the title implies, I think it’s time to move in a new direction. I can’t say right now, but I believe it’s time for a significant change in the way I do things. I’ve been reading a lot lately about time management and i’ve been wanting to delve a little into the design of a personal planning system for myself.

Hopefully I can begin some work on new projects and follow that well into December post-CAMA as I look at Law schools.

Miami Heat ’08-’09

I had a thought of really going forward with building a dedicated Miami Heat Blog, but in the end, I just decided that I’d rather use the one site as sort of a launching pad for many different ideas. Yeah, I’m going to have to begin organizing this site better, but, hopefully I’ll be able to get things together.

The Heat Report

There’s a lot of anticipation and even more expectation as the new season approaches. Perhaps there has never been a season in the Heat history that will matter more than this one. We have a new coach, Randy Pfund is gone and we have an otherwise unproven roster of what amounts to young untested talent. Now, I have no doubt that Coach President Riley will eventually deliver, but one has to wonder this – ‘Will the Heat be any good this year’?

Ever since he came on the scene, we’ve always counted on Dwyane Wade to carry the team. Let’s face it, while Shaq may have led the team to the finals in 2006, it was Wade, Haslem and Zo who secured the trophy in game 6, and it was Wade who did the heavy lifting when it seemed that we were going to be swept in those finals. But, it’s 2008 and we’ve got a different Wade. Sure, there are those that are going to say that he will be vastly improved over last year, which I believe, but then there are going to be those who would suggest that D-Wade will never be the same guy he was circa June ’06. For Me, I simply wish him well and hope he’s even a fraction of what he was in our championship season.

One argument that people will certainly present is that Wade looked like a world beater at the Olympics. Sure, but he was also surrounded by BronBron, Kobe, Carmelo, and the entire Nike all-pro team. It’s pretty easy to look great when you’re Wade and playing with the best in the world. But, it’s another story altogether when you have to carry a team night in and night out.

The best case scenario is that Wade enters the season with his merry band of assassins and totally takes the league by storm. In my mind, the success of the team and Wade hinges on the following:

  • Udonis Haslem channels PJ & Brian Grant and becomes a beast – The Heat have had a long line of undersized big men who would come up big when called upon. For the Heat to be a success in 2008, Udonis has to be the man to pick up the slack. Now, I know there’s going to be those who say ‘We have Beasley and Marion’. Well, the fact of the matter is that Udonis is built in the same way as our other past big men – quiet, workman-like, with a mean streak. These are qualities I just don’t see in Marion or Beasley. Remember the night when Udonis stared down Jermaine O’neal, and all Jermaine could do is call Haslem a role player? See, that’s what you have to love about Haslem. Miami needs an enforcer, someone who can give us 12-14 good points each night along with getting 10+ boards. If we are to return to prominence, it’s going to begin with Wade and Haslem as the Pillars.
  • Beasley and Marion provide consistent scoring – If Marion and Beasley become the great forward tandem of the league, the Heat are virtually unstoppable. But, you know how on the video games we build these great teams that never actually work out in real life? This is sort of like that. The reality is that either Beasley or Marion can’t work in Miami, it’s just the way it is. To be honest, Haslem, Beasley, and Marion all play the small/power forward role, with Haslem more along the lines of forward/center. That simply leaves Marion and Beasley fighting for minutes on a nightly basis. Now, the keen thing to do is to make Beasley work for his minutes in the beginning, but when you’ve just finished a 15-win season, working people in is probably not going to do it for the fans, especially when the guy you’re holding back is your consolation prize for a dreadful year. So, the real, best second option is to go with the NFL two-back model, where they play some together, sometimes you player the hotter guy, and most of the time there is a designated go-to guy (Marion). This whole Forward by committee plan would work if everyone came in with the win first mentality. And, I understand we’re talking about getting into rhythms and needing to give guys consistent minutes, but I really do think that they could work.
  • We find a strong Point guard solution – Okay, Shaun Livingston is not ready. I’ve had to tell myself that everyday since he signed with the team. I still can’t believe that we were able to get Shaun. I think that if he comes back and can be fully recovered, we have the steal of the decade. He was already showing signs of growth right before the injury, and if he can get back to where he was, we’re set. But……

Before any of that happens, were back where we were last season; pick your poison – Chris Quinn or Marcus Banks. Mario Chalmers? Well, to be honest, I fully expected him to be on his way out, what with the whole marijuana episode. I mean, remember Rodney Buford? But, let’s say Chalmers is the next great point in the league; that still doesn’t happen this year. So, we’re on the Chris Quinn Train, and I must admit, I’m not that worried about it. I think that Chris has the potential to be a decent 1 man in this league and besides, it’s really going to be D-Wade controlling the ball most of the time anyway.

  • We need a strong bench – It’s important essential to have strong bench play in the upcoming season. I think Pat has assembled a pretty resilient bench, with James Jones & Dorrell Wright leading the way. I’ve loved JJ since his days at The U with Darius Rice. I think we have a really interesting set of bench guys, especially on paper, and I feel that if they develop a chemistry, we should be alright.
  • I think the Heat and D-Wade should be looking a whole lot better in 08-09 considering the Heats’ record of resilience.

Getting Ready for ’08/’09

I’m beginning to feel really good about the 08-09 Miami Heat. For one, we’ve got Wade back, and that’s already good for at least 15 extra wins if he’s healthy. Secondy, I think the idea of the Heat being this horribly bad is simply unthinkable. If you look at Pat Riley’s tenure in Miami, he’s always been able to deliver the goods. And the years he couldn’t… Well;

  • 2002 – (36-46, Missed Playoffs) – overall forgettable season. But, what do we get for all of our pain? Caron Butler.
  • 2003 – (25-27, Missed Playoffs) – Another disappointing season. Caron was a bright spot, but overall we were pretty terrible, but then comes draft night and we get a guy named Wade.
  • 2008 – (15-67, Missed Playoffs) – Really, the pain is just beginning to subside. But, as a consolation prize, we do have Michael Beasley.

I mean, I would never for one second doubt Pat Riley who has, time and time again, shown that he is an intelligent Team President and very capable of bringing another championship to Miami.

Local Congregation Marketing, Part 2

Okay, while the last article dealt with the overall need to put marketing principles in place at your congregation, this time we’ll delve a little into specifics.

Identity System

Identity System

In today’s environment, any great marketing system has to first address the overall identity of the congregation, and what better way than to have an identity system as the cornerstone. Now, an Identity system, at its core, is simply a stationary set that provides identification for your congregation. In most instances an identity system consists of a coordinated letterhead and envelope set and a business card. In more substantial cases, there are various labels and note cards and other collateral pieces that are used. The key, however, is the seemless transition from one piece of stationary to the next. This is achieved through 2 specific factors; The Logo and the color scheme.

visitor card

The Logo – The logo, while important, is as simple to create as utilizing a stylized font in spelling out your congregations name. The key is consistency in usage, the fact that every time people see your name at your congregation it is always neatly displayed with the same characteristics, be it the same color and font, or any other way that generally sets your logo apart. At the Magnolia Park Church of Christ, there is both a primary logo and a secondary one. The Primary logo consists of a stylized spelling of “The Park”, the congregations name, with the title Magnolia Park Church of Christ directly underneath. This is done with the specific purpose of people associating the both the nickname and the congregation name. The nickname presents a friendly feel and is, in a sense, welcoming when seen and disarming, but at the heart is always the congregations name as to always remind people that The Park is a church. The Primary Logo is used mainly in-house for the members on all publications and there are plans to utilize it more on information that goes out to visitors and others.

The secondary logo is a much simpler logo that is just a styled capitalized M & P that appears on everything from the church bulletin to announcements and visitors cards.

The Color Scheme – It’s important to have a set of colors you work with when designing congregation materials. For one, with a defined color scheme, you’ll be able to always achieve a level of familiarity with those that receive your materials. Also, as an added bonus, you’ll not have to spend a lot of time with colors that may not work well. One of the prime points of creating a color scheme is great color usage. Think about it; on your bulletin board, which bulletins stand out? And which announcements wash out with their bland black and whites. Even if you’re pressed for money, a pre-designed letterhead with spot color will achieve both recognition and consistency in presentation.

Keep this in mind – The more time and effort that is spent on creating a smooth and consistent image for your congregation in print, the more likely it is that people will respond positively when your name is presented to them

In Part 3, we’ll look at utilizing the bulletin as a ministry tool

The Millionaire Artist – Redux

When I posted the The Millionaire Artist article two weeks ago I had planned to create a downloadable document that people could print but never got around to it. Well, a little quality time in front of the laptop during the debate and I am finished. The booklet is primarily the same as the article, though, the booklet has an appendix with links to my research that you too can look at as you work with your ministry.
